Quick Take

  • CleanSpark is up 6.4% year to date, while BitFuFu and Canaan have fallen more than 50% and 70%, respectively.

Public bitcoin miners CleanSpark, BitFuFu, and Canaan each reported lower bitcoin production in July for the second consecutive month, even as the price of bitcoin recovered from a major selloff in June.

CleanSpark produced 586 BTC during July, down about 5% from 614 BTC in June. BitFuFu's production fell roughly 10% to 112 BTC from 125 BTC, while Canaan's output dropped about 28% to 46 BTC from 64 BTC.

The declines come as bitcoin (BTC) recovered during July, opening the month around $58,500 and closing near $62,800. That followed a steep June selloff that saw bitcoin fall from roughly $73,500 at the beginning of the month to around $58,500 by the end.

Stock performance among the three miners is all over the map this year. CleanSpark (CLSK) rose 1.8% to $12.30 on Monday, putting it up about 6.4% year to date. BitFuFu fell 5.5% to $1.37 and has lost more than half its value this year, while Canaan (CAN) slipped about 1% to $0.23, extending its year-to-date decline to more than 70%.

CleanSpark's July production decline came as its average operating hashrate fell about 9% from June, while the company reported an average daily production of around 18.9 BTC.

The company ended July holding 13,931 BTC, making it the 10th-largest publicly traded Bitcoin treasury.

CleanSpark had been positioning itself as a broader data center operator alongside its bitcoin mining business. In July, the company signed a $6.6 billion 20-year lease with an unnamed tech company for its Sandersville, Georgia, campus.

BitFuFu

BitFuFu's bitcoin production fell to 112 BTC in July from 125 in June as total hashrate under management declined about 7% from June.

The decline, however, came entirely from its cloud mining segment. Self-mining production actually increased to 72 BTC from 70 BTC, while cloud mining production dropped to 40 BTC from 55 BTC.

BitFuFu said it used a portion of its bitcoin holdings during July to make advance payments for future hashrate capacity. Those payments ate into BitFuFu's bitcoin treasury, which fell to 1,314 BTC at the end of July from 1,671 BTC a month earlier.

The company currently holds the 36th-ranked public bitcoin treasury.

Canaan

Canaan recorded the steepest production decline of the three, mining 46 BTC in July compared with 64 BTC in June.

The company said its joint venture mining operations continued to stabilize following wildfire disruptions at its Alborz site in Texas.

Canaan ended July with 1,917 BTC and 3,952 ETH on its balance sheet. The company also authorized management to monetize a portion of its crypto treasury to fund share repurchases.
