New Bitcoin upgrade catches hidden key leaks hiding the exact fix

Bitcoin improvement proposal BIP461 could make a hidden route for leaking wallet secrets easier to detect. The draft defines a common signing procedure for ECDSA, an existing Bitcoin signature scheme. Authored by Liam Gilligan, the proposal was merged into the BIPs repository on Sept. 16 and remains marked Draft. Its signatures work under existing Bitcoin consensus rules, so implementing this signing procedure requires no consensus change. Comparing signatures for deviations ECDSA allows a signer choices while creating a valid signature, including the nonce, a temporary value used in signing. Malicious firmware can exploit that freedom to hide key material in signatures that still pass verification, and BIP461 fixes those choices through a specified deterministic procedure. Bitcoin‘s acceptance of a signature cannot establish that its creation kept the key safe. A common specification supplies an expected output against which the signer’s behavior can be checked. The comparison requires identical inputs and the exact same standard, including access to the

SlowMist traces Bitget hack activity to Aug. 31 zero-day exploit

SlowMist traced the earliest logged malicious activity linked to Bitgets $388 million theft to Aug. 31, when an attacker exploited a zero-day vulnerability affecting a third-party security product. Attackers stole the funds from Bitget‘s hot wallets on Sept. 24 (UTC), transferring assets to addresses they controlled across several blockchains. SlowMist’s investigation identified malicious activity involving two third-party security products and a wallet application host. According to a SlowMist progress report, the attacker used a hidden script to access the database of what SlowMist called “Product A,” after retrieving its password from an environment variable. Similar activity was later detected on two other nodes on Sept. 23 and Sept. 25. The dates and times in the report are in UTC+8. On Sept. 25, the attacker also accessed the management platform of a second security product, which SlowMist called “Product B,” using an internal employees identity. SlowMist said the attacker then attempted to inject system commands, alter server configurations and upload malicious program files. SlowMist said its investigation remains ongoing and that it is still examining how the attacker moved between the affected systems. Attacker used custom withdrawal tool The security company said it recovered a deleted, highly customized tool used to manipulate the wallet systems withdrawal process.

European stablecoin issuer AllUnity launches USD stablecoin USDAU

AllUnity is launching a new stablecoin pegged to the US dollar, expanding its digital asset lineup as dollar-pegged tokens continue to dominate the global stablecoin market. The new token, USDAU, will maintain a 1:1 peg to the US dollar through segregated reserves and debut on Ethereum, Solana, Base, Tempo, Arc and Polygon, AllUnity said in a Wednesday announcement shared with Cointelegraph. AllUnity, regulated under the European Union‘s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA), already issues euro-backed EURAU, Swiss franc-backed CHFAU and Swedish krona-backed SEKAU stablecoins. CoinGecko measures EURAU’s market capitalization at roughly $400,000 and CHFAUs at about $45 million. The launch comes as European policymakers debate the implications of dollar stablecoin dominance. US dollar-pegged tokens account for more than 99% of the roughly $291 billion global stablecoin market by capitalization, according to CoinGecko. The European Central Bank warned in June that greater use in European tokenized finance could deepen dependence on the dollar and weaken the euros role. AllUnity CEO Alexander Höptner pushed back on the idea that the dollar itself is the central concern. “Europe‘s concern isn’t with the dollar, its with dollar liquidity flowing through offshore issuers with no European supervisor, no enforceable redemption rights and no visibility into their reserves,” Höptner told Cointelegraph. He said USDAU

Brazils Petrobras uses Cardano to track sustainable aviation fuel, renewable diesel

Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras has developed two blockchain applications using Cardano to track sustainability data for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and its Diesel R renewable fuel. According to a Wednesday announcement from the Cardano Foundation, the first application, developed with PUC-Rios Ledger Labs, tokenizes environmental attributes associated with SAF into digital tokens designed to prevent the same claim from being used more than once. The application uses a Book-and-Claim model, which allows the environmental benefit to be separated from the physical fuel and assigned to an airline, company or passenger even if the SAF is used elsewhere. The tokens, known as CS-SAF, contain metadata aligned with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Passengers can also claim CS-SAF tokens through an application and receive a certificate tied to their journey and associated environmental claim.Source: Cardano Foundation The second application creates digital checkpoints to track the production, transportation and use of Diesel R, Petrobras‘ renewable diesel fuel. The Cardano Foundation said the data could support Scope 3 reporting, which covers indirect emissions across a company’s value chain. The projects are part of an ongoing research and development collaboration that began in 2023 with blockchain education for Petrobras employees and expanded in 2025

Bitcoin Price Gives Up Gains After Short-Lived Pump to $85.5K

Bitcoin pumped above $85,500 on Wednesday morning following the release of lower-than-expected U.S. PCE inflation data for August—but a quick pullback erased most of the gains. Key TakeawaysBitcoin shot above $85,500 on Wednesday following lower-than-expected August PCE inflation data.Intraday volatility led to $55 million in short bets being liquidated within four hours.Analysts and chartists like Ted Pillows project a potential pull-back into the high $70,000s before a rally. PCE Data Triggers Intraday Volatility Bitcoins price briefly spiked to $85,500 on Wednesday before a sell-off nearly erased the gains, leaving the cryptocurrency marginally higher just hours before September comes to a close. The rally appeared to have been sparked by the release of U.S. inflation data, which showed slower-than-expected price increases in August. As shown on the daily chart, before its morning surge, bitcoins price fluctuated in the $83,000 to $83,500 range, continuing a pattern that emerged following its plunge to $82,555 on Monday. While it surpassed the $83,500 resistance a few times between Tuesday afternoon and the early hours of Sept. 30, bearish pressure dragged it back below the threshold each time. Moments before the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) data release, bitcoin reclaimed $83,500, reaching $83,700 around 8:20 a.m. EST. According to Bitstamp data, bitcoin

UKs 2027 crypto rules let firms remove trust protection from Bitcoin lent for yield

UK crypto firms can now apply for authorization as of Sept. 30, bringing Bitcoin holders closer to a rulebook that will treat coins pledged as qualifying borrowing collateral differently from coins transferred into lending for yield. The distinction could matter when a platform fails: safeguarded assets and a contractual promise to return equivalent coins give customers different starting points for seeking recovery. But the safeguards in the rules it finalized June 30 are forthcoming, with the new regime expected to begin Oct. 25, 2027. An application today does not establish authorization or bring those protections into effect. The central distinction concerns what a platform is allowed to do with customer assets. Under the future rules, covered custody generally requires a safeguarding trust under CASS 17, the crypto custody chapter of the FCAs Client Assets Sourcebook. Retail collateral supporting an in-scope crypto borrowing service must remain safeguarded, with a narrow debt-discharge exception. A qualifying lending service can instead use an exemption from

Singapore crypto activity grows 55% as broader region contracts

Singapores crypto activity rose 55.4% to $284 billion in the year ended June 2026, bucking a regional contraction and regaining its position as the largest crypto economy in Central and Southeast Asia and Oceania (CSAO), according to Chainalysis. Much of the growth came from institutional platform activity, which increased 94% to $60 billion, concentrated among a small number of market makers, over-the-counter trading firms, and institutional brokerages. Chainalysis said the broader CSAO crypto economy contracted 6.8% over the same period. “The growth in Singapores institutional platform ecosystem was very concentrated and marked by mostly high-volume activity by existing platforms rather than the dynamic entry of new services,” Chainalysis told Cointelegraph. The findings come as Singapore has been working to tighten crypto regulation while supporting tokenization, stablecoins and digital-asset settlement. Total crypto economic activity in CSAO.
