BtcTurk halts withdrawals amid suspected $48M crypto hack

BtcTurk halted deposits and withdrawals, citing a “technical issue” with hot wallets, while trading and local currency withdrawals and deposits remained active. Turkish cryptocurrency exchange BtcTurk has halted withdrawals amid reports suggesting that the platform has suffered a major loss of funds due to a hack. Cybersecurity firm Cyvers took to X on Thursday to report that it had detected $48 million worth of digital assets, including Ether (ETH), involved in unusual activity. “Our system detected multiple alerts across ETH, AVAX, ARB, BASE, OP, MANTLE and MATIC networks,” Cyvers reported, adding that the attacker had moved the assets to two addresses and begun swapping them. BtcTurk subsequently halted deposits and withdrawals, citing a “technical issue” with hot wallets, reporting that trading and local currency withdrawals and deposits remained intact. “Due to a technical issue in hot wallets, cryptocurrency deposits and withdrawals are halted. Further notification will be shared once they are back up. Crypto buy and sell orders, as well as Turkish lira deposits and withdrawals are uninterrupted,” BtcTurk said in an announcement shared at 12:43 pm UTC. This is a developing story, and further information will be added as it becomes available.

There is a New Development in BTCTurk Hack Incident: Hacker Attacked Another Platform

According to a new statement made by cryptocurrency detective ZachXBT, the hacker who stole an undisclosed amount of assets from BTCTurk hacked another cryptocurrency platform called Sportsbet and stole more than $ 2.9 million in assets from there. The assets stolen in the two hacking incidents were thus mixed. BtcTurk had assured users that its financial flexibility exceeded the affected amounts. Meanwhile, the previous hack coincided with a significant 10% drop in the Avalanche (AVAX) token. ZachXBT reported that approximately 1.96 million AVAX tokens worth $54.2 million were transferred to various exchanges such as Coinbase, Binance, Gate, and significantly via THORChain. *This is not investment advice.

Infrastructure in the area suffered major damages, resulting in a deadly cross-border humanitarian disaster. However, the world was quick to respond. Across the internet and various social media platforms, people have been gathering funds for local and international aid organizations to provide relief to those in the affected areas. Two of the largest aid efforts in Turkey, AFAD Turkiye, the government agency for such disasters, and the NGO Ahbap, led by philanthropist Haluk Levent, have been at the head of organizing an influx of aid. Levent announced that his organization has opened up crypto addresses in order to accept aid in various forms of virtual currencies. Refik Anadol, a Turkish artist and art director, also started a crowdfund via an (ETH) address, in which he will transfer the collected funds to both AFAD and Ahbap.
