Australia Wants the Banks To Report Crypto Transactions

Credit Suisse to buy UBS Group for USD 3.02 billion after the latter failed. Credit Suisse and other financial firms have been affected by the banking contagion According to reports, banks have been requested to report and provide updates on transactions involving crypto assets by the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. The announcement is made in light of previous bank sector failures concerning Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Credit Suisse. After failing to raise USD 2.2 billion to cover a loss from the sale of assets, US government bonds were mainly impacted by increasing interest rates, wherein SVB failed to survive in the US. These events led to a bank run in the US and raised investor concerns about the condition of the banking industry as a whole. In addition, on March 19, UBS Group and Credit Suisse reached an agreement for the latter to buy the former for USD 3.2 billion after the latter failed over the weekend. Unprepared For Banking Contagion The general public was unprepared for the banking contagion that started earlier this month. Three well-known financial firms fell like dominoes, victimizing the United States. Although Credit Suisse is in trouble, many people, including Citigroup, believe that European banks are secure and are unlikely

Bitcoin Liquidity is Drying Up as Crypto ‘Tourists’ Recoil From Industry Disorder

(Bloomberg) — By just about any measure, Bitcoin liquidity remains low, despite the cryptocurrencys eye-catching upsurge this year. Investors have been paying more on trades because of slippage, or the difference between the expected price of a transaction and the price at which its fully executed, a sign of worsening liquidity, according to Conor Ryder at Kaiko. The higher the difficulty in trading, the more investors are exposed to potential volatile price swings. This can happen due to a change in the bid-ask spread in between the time a trade is placed and filled, or when theres insufficient order-book depth to support large orders. Even as a rebound in Bitcoin this year made it the best-performing asset in the first quarter, a widening US regulatory crackdown and the collapse of a few crypto-adjacent banks has tempered some investors enthusiasm. “It‘s more indicative of the institutional reluctancy to offer liquidity in the space,” Ryder, a research analyst at the Paris-based firm, said. A lot of crypto firms don’t want to get caught in the middle of a battle between US regulators and exchanges. Though prices have recovered at the start of 2023, trading volumes and liquidity in the crypto market have dried up when measured over

A medida

‘Congress must raise the bank deposit insurance limit to $10 million’

Earlier this month, as Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank failed in rapid succession, federal regulators took the extraordinary measure of waiving the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) deposit insurance limit of $250,000 for those two institutions. Citing a “systemic risk exception,” the move protected uninsured depositors–but only at these two banks. Absent a more permanent policy change, many depositors fear that their money won‘t be guaranteed unless it’s in a large, “systemically important” bank. In order to restore confidence in the banking system and stem the dangerous outflow from regional and community banks, Congress must act now to raise the FDIC insurance limit to $10 million. This threshold would provide meaningful protection to small and medium-sized businesses and ensure a solid base of deposits that arent susceptible to bank runs. Two of the primary policy goals of FDIC insurance are to provide confidence and stability in the banking system. Exception-based coverage undermines these objectives. It signals to depositors that they get some extra protection at a systemically important bank. As a result, larger depositors are moving their balances out of regional and community banks and into the biggest national banks, further consolidating our financial system into the hands of a few

US Power Plant Firm Goes Bankrupt After Winter Storm Penalties

(Bloomberg) — Lincoln Power LLC, the owner of two Illinois power plants, filed for bankruptcy after its financial strain was exacerbated by nearly $39 million in penalties levied by the biggest US electric-grid operator. The Chapter 11 filing allows Lincoln, a unit of Carlyle Group-backed Cogentrix Energy Power Management LLC, to keep operating while working on a plan to repay creditors. PJM Interconnection LLC, which runs the grid that stretches from Washington to Chicago, fined Lincoln after its plants in Elgin and East Dundee, Illinois, failed to generate enough power during a severe winter storm in December. The grid operator in February demanded that those plants provide millions of dollars in collateral to prove Lincolns continued creditworthiness, according to bankruptcy court filings. Ensuing negotiations resulted in PJM withholding a combined $350,000 from the plants each week. Lincoln isnt the only company facing the penalties PJM put in place to hold plants accountable for failing to show up in emergencies. The grid operator estimates that these fines may reach $2 billion after widespread power-plant failures during the December storm. PJM has also asked federal regulators to give companies that are at risk of bankruptcy more time to pay these fines. Read More: Biggest US Grid Saw
