SARS Targets Six Million Users The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has released guidance on the taxation of crypto assets, a major regulatory push to standardize compliance across the countrys booming digital asset sector. The draft document, published July 1, 2026, details how the tax authority plans to govern and audit transactions for an estimated 5.8 million to 6 million South African cryptocurrency users. The revenue service has opened the document for public comment until Aug. 31, 2026. SARS said the documents principles are designed to be “foundational, rather than overly specific,” due to the rapid innovation in blockchain technology. However, tax experts note that the new guidelines represent a deliberate effort by the tax authority to eliminate reporting confusion. The launch coincides with the deployment of the Crypto Revenue Augmentation Unit, a newly formed, specialized team dedicated to tracking and auditing digital wallets. Under the updated framework, SARS reiterates that crypto assets are legally classified as intangible assets rather than foreign currency or traditional money. Because they do not qualify as “exchange items” under Section 24I of the Income Tax Act, taxpayers do not have to calculate or pay tax on unrealized gains or losses while simply holding their assets. Tax liabilities are
India‘s Enforcement Directorate launched a crackdown on the country’s crypto economy, saying it had quietly become unauthorized cross-border money transfer pipes. The regulator raided six premises linked to five Bengaluru-based fiat on-ramp and off-ramp platforms, allegedly conducting illegal cross-border transfers. Through its Bengaluru Zonal office, the Enforcement Directorate ransacked six premises this week under section 37 of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), 1999. ED named Transak Technology India, Carretx Technologies (Carret), Mokshagna Technologies (formerly Xpat, now Remit2Any), Buyhatke Internet (which runs Onramp.money), and Abhibha Technologies (Onmeta), as the crypto payments involved. The investigators reportedly froze approximately ₹6 crore sitting in the bank accounts they suspect were used to move the funds. Indias ED explains how perpetrators moved money Indias financial watchdog explained that the crypto payment firms used the same pattern across all platforms. A customer would deposit rupees into a company-controlled bank account, then use the money to buy virtual digital assets. The companies primarily bought USDT stablecoins, which were then sent through crypto platforms, sold over the counter, and then cash was paid out to the recipient on the other side of the border. According to ED, the five platforms bypassed laws by conducting cross-border payments without purpose codes, without Foreign
Fintech company Ramp Network said Friday it launched a multichain self-custodial wallet designed to tackle a common friction point in crypto of needing to rely on outside providers for core actions such as buying, swapping and cashing out. The company said the wallet allows users to buy, sell, trade and cash out digital assets inside a single application, using Ramps own on-ramp, off-ramp and cross-chain infrastructure rather than handing users off to external services, according to an announcement shared with Cointelegraph. Ramp said the wallet launches with support for Ether (ETH) across eight networks: Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Linea, MegaETH, Optimism, Polygon zkEVM and zkSync Era. It will also offer support for additional networks, including Bitcoin, Solana, Binance Smart Chain, Polygon, Apechain, Avalanche, Celo and Gnosis. Simplifying self-custody remains one of cryptos biggest product problems. Ramp is betting that bringing payments, swaps and cash access into one app can make non-custodial wallets feel less fragmented without taking control of user assets. Ramp said it uses $USDC ($USDC) on Base as a core balance for transfers, payments and in-app activity, while assets remain secured through a self-custodial setup using passkeys and optional key export. Other crypto wallets that offer integrated decentralized exchange (DEX) features for asset
