Stacks' STX, a Bitcoin layer-2 token, has surged by 50% in four weeks

While major cryptocurrencies remain choppy, $STX, the native token of the Bitcoin layer-2 project Stacks, is rallying. The cryptocurrency has surged nearly 10% in 24 hours, 14% over the past week and more than 50% in four weeks, outperforming bitcoin $BTC$83,696.96, ether ETH$2,499.57, $XRP ($XRP) and other cryptocurrencies. The outperformance likely reflects investor interest in Stacks non-custodial bitcoin staking architecture. This framework lets $BTC holders stake and earn yield directly on the main Bitcoin blockchain while retaining strict control of their private keys. In contrast, traditional frameworks require users to wrap their assets into synthetic tokens (like wBTC) or move funds over cross-chain bridges to earn additional yield. Stacks framework relies on a mechanism called “bonding,” which requires participants to lock up assets to secure the network. The Bonding Period 3, due in November, requires participants holding native $STX to lock a specific ratio of $STX alongside their $BTC — equivalent to roughly 5% of the total value of their $BTC — to successfully secure protocol stacking capacity. This creates a positive feedback loop for $STX: As more $BTC moves into the Stacks ecosystem, a larger portion of $STX is systematically locked up and removed from the active market. South Korea blocks 27 crypto exchanges, including Bitmart and Kucoin

South Korea is blocking access to 27 unregistered crypto exchanges websites, including KuCoin, BitMart, and MEXC, extending its crackdown on foreign trading platforms beyond just their mobile apps. The countrys Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) announced Tuesday that the Korea Communications Standards Commission approved the restrictions following reviews on Oct. 6 and 7. Websites operated from overseas will be blocked, while those operating domestically face service termination, the FIU noted. The move closes another route for South Korean investors to access unregistered exchanges after authorities restricted access to their mobile apps on Google and Apple last year. Regulators can now seek website blocks as soon as they detect unregistered activity, without waiting for a court ruling or evidence that customers have lost money. The FIU did not specify how long the restrictions will last or set a deadline for the exchanges to register. However, any exchange that wants to legally operate in the country and serve South Korean customers must register with the FIU and meet the countrys security and anti-money laundering (AML) requirements. “We respect applicable laws and regulations across jurisdictions and continuously strengthen our compliance framework in response to evolving regulatory requirements,” a KuCoin spokesperson said. “User assets remain safe and secure, and we

Bitcoin, ether slip and rebound as South Korean stocks slide on AI-related concerns

South Koreas equity benchmark plunged 5.5% on Tuesday, leaving the index roughly 38% below its June all-time high. Crypto also saw sharp swings, with bitcoin $BTC$83,696.96 falling below $81,000 before rebounding above $84,000 and settling just above $83,000. Ether $ETH$2,504.47 fell as low as $2,400. The Asian selloff reflected mounting concerns about the AI trade. Broadcom CEO called current AI investing “casino-like”, knocking investor confidence and reported advances in memory-chip technology at Chinas CXMT raised concerns of stronger competition for established chipmakers. Samsung Electronics (005930) and SK Hynix (00060) led the declines, falling 7% and 10%, respectively. Investors are also positioning ahead of Wednesday‘s U.S. CPI report, another potential source of volatility. Headline inflation is forecast at 3.6% year over year, with core inflation at 2.5%. A headline reading in line with that forecast would mark an acceleration from the previous month’s 3.4%. Meanwhile, third-quarter earnings season gathers pace, with JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS) and Citigroup (C) scheduled to report later today, offering a fresh assessment of consumer demand, credit conditions and corporate activity.
