“MiCA will empower my company,” said Thomas Restout, the CEO of B2C2, while talking to Finance Magnates recently. “From our side, MiCA is a great benefit.” Although B2C2 is a cryptocurrency liquidity provider, it falls under the MiCAs purview to distribute digital assets across Europe. “MiCA will define the rules of the game,” Restout remarked. “Once the rules are defined, many more players can come in… If there are regulations, you know what the standards are, you have a clarification on the products. It will continue to raise the product and, certainly, what can and cannot be distributed.” “As ETF opened the crypto world to new participants, MiCA will also open the crypto world to new participants,” he clarified. The European regulator is implementing MiCA in two phases. The first phase, which concerns the rules around the distribution of stablecoins, took effect on June 30, while the second phase will be effective at the end of this year. Despite the benefits, there might be some short-term disadvantages due to the limits in the transactional volume with the non-euro-pegged stablecoins. “MiCA could slow down the volumes,” continued Restout, adding: “But I think this would be for a given individual. Japanese Securities Giant SBI Completes Takeover of Crypto Exchange Bitpoint Source: Pixs:sell/Adobe The Japanese securities giant SBI has completed a takeover of the rival crypto exchange Bitpoint. The move consolidates the firms increasingly tight grip on the domestic crypto market – and marks the second time it has taken over a domestic rival. SBI confirmed the move in a post on its website. The company snapped up a controlling (51%) stake in Bitpoint back in May last year. But, the firm wrote, it has now agreed a deal to buy the remaining 49% of Bitpoints share. The company did not disclose how much it had paid for the shares. SBI explained that it would move to make Bitpoint a “wholly owned subsidiary” firm. The company also outright owns the TaoTao crypto trading platform – an exchange that was formerly part-owned by Yahoo Japan. SBI bought TaoTao in 2020. SBI also operates SBI VC Trade, its own organic crypto exchange. SBI noted that it would use liquidity from its UK-based subsidiary B2C2 to improve existing Bitpoint services. The firm added that it may look to list gaming-related tokens on the platform in the future. Bitpoint was founded by the points system operator Remixpoint. Japanese Securities Giants Muscling out
Major crypto options exchanges, including industry leader Deribit, are due to settle billions of dollars worth of bitcoin options contracts this Friday. Analysts do not expect the monthly expiration to have a notable impact on bitcoin, which is under pressure this week due to several macro risks and regulatory concerns. Data provided by Skew shows a total of 73,700 options contracts worth $3.14 billion due for expiry Friday, of which nearly 50,000 are call options and the rest are puts. Deribit alone will be settling more than 85% of the total open interest. “I‘m not expecting much fireworks unless we run through $50,000; there’s some concentrated open interest there,” Shiliang Tang, chief investment officer of crypto hedge fund LedgerPrime told CoinDesk in a Telegram chat. Tang explained that if bitcoin breaks above $50,000, traders who sold calls in anticipation of a bearish move or consolidation may resort to hedging - buying the cryptocurrency in the spot or futures market to mitigate losses arising from the short call position. That could put upward pressure on the cryptocurrency, accelerating gains. However, that scenario looks unlikely given this weeks 11% drop to $42,000.
